Photography Club

PCIIW (Photo Club of Istanbul International Women)

The photo club is a group of international women whose skill levels (and cameras!) vary from the very basic to semi-professional, but who all share the desire to capture the world in a photograph and to explore Istanbul while doing so.

We have two events every month:

A meeting which generally has a specific theme led either by one of the group with expertise in that field or by someone outside the club.  Some of our topics last year were managing photo files, manipulating photos, using flickr, black & white, and portraits.  This year we are featuring a ‘Meet the Photographer’ series with talks from various local and foreign professional photographers.

A photo trek somewhere in Istanbul.  Last year some of our trek destinations were the Glass Factory, Santral Istanbul, the Yahya Efendi cemetery, Miniaturk, Rumeli Kavağı, Emirgan Park, Kuzguncuk, and even a two-day trek to Iznik.

We alternate the days (Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays) on which we do both the meetings and the treks since many of our members have commitments on certain days.

We schedule two basic photo courses a year with Cenk Gençliş of FotoTrek so that beginners can learn the ins and outs of their cameras and we occasionally schedule other additional courses, usually one-day events, with either Cenk or with Ceren Semerci.

We have had several photo exhibitions over the years.  Last year’s was at Java Studio in Sultan Ahmet and we will be opening one entitled Public Places, Private Spaces in November at the Arnavutkoy Art Gallery

Last year we entered the technological age and created a flickr (www.flickr.com) site (iistanbul2008) where we share our trek and exhibition photos for comments from the group.  We also have our own PCIIW flickr group (by invitation only) which we use to make reservations for events, to share information, and to ask questions.
